Napalm Death are a British extreme metal band from Birmingham who are considered pioneers of grindcore. Their 1987 debut 'Scum' featured songs lasting only seconds and blast beat drumming that defined the genre. The Guinness Book of Records recognized 'You Suffer' as the world's shortest song at 1.316 seconds. The band evolved from hardcore punk origins to incorporate death metal elements while maintaining their extremity and political lyrical content. Their influence on extreme metal, particularly grindcore and death metal, was foundational. Despite numerous lineup changes, Napalm Death maintained their uncompromising approach across decades. They represented extreme music's most intense and politically engaged possibilities.
