M People were a British dance-pop group from Manchester formed in 1990 who achieved significant success with their blend of house music and sophisticated pop. Fronted by vocalist Heather Small, whose powerful voice became their signature, the band produced hits including 'Moving On Up,' 'One Night in Heaven,' 'Search for the Hero,' and 'Proud.' They won the Mercury Prize for their album 'Elegant Slumming.' M People brought house music to mainstream pop audiences without losing dance floor credibility. Small's inspirational vocal performances distinguished them from faceless dance acts. Their influence on British dance-pop and the integration of house music into mainstream pop was substantial.
