Artist: Monkees
Genre: Pop Rock
The Monkees were an American rock and pop band formed in Los Angeles in 1966 for a television series of the same name. Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork became genuine pop stars despite initial dismissal as a 'manufactured' group. Their hits, including 'Last Train to Clarksville,' 'I'm a Believer,' 'Daydream Believer,' and 'Pleasant Valley Sunday,' were expertly crafted pop songs that achieved lasting popularity. The band fought for and won the right to play their own instruments and have creative control. Michael Nesmith's country-rock experiments influenced that genre's development. The Monkees' legacy has been reassessed positively, recognizing both their catchy pop achievements and their role in television history.
