Mayhem are a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 who became one of the most infamous and influential groups in extreme metal history. Their early years were marked by tragedy, including vocalist Dead's suicide and the murder of guitarist Euronymous by former member Varg Vikernes. Their album 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' is considered a black metal landmark. Beyond the controversy, Mayhem's musical innovations helped define black metal's sound and aesthetic. Their influence on extreme metal and their central role in the Norwegian black metal scene made them legendary figures. Mayhem continued performing through various lineups, maintaining their position in black metal history.
