Maxi Priest is a British reggae and R&B singer of Jamaican descent who achieved international success with his smooth lover's rock style. His biggest hit, 'Close to You,' topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1990, making him one of the first British reggae artists to achieve American crossover success. Other hits included 'Wild World' and 'Set the Night to Music' (with Roberta Flack). Priest's ability to blend reggae with R&B and pop expanded the genre's commercial potential. His collaborations with artists from Shabba Ranks to Shaggy demonstrated his continued relevance.
