Lionel Hampton was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader who popularized the vibraphone as a jazz instrument. His virtuosic technique and energetic performances made him one of jazz's most exciting entertainers. Hampton played with Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman before leading his own successful big band for over 50 years. His composition 'Flying Home' became a signature piece featuring exciting solos that anticipated rhythm and blues. Hampton's bands launched careers of numerous musicians including Quincy Jones, Charles Mingus, and Dinah Washington. His showmanship combined with genuine musical excellence made him beloved by audiences worldwide. Hampton's contribution to jazz vibraphone technique and big band entertainment established him as one of the music's most important figures.
