Artist: Lionel Bart
Genre: Musical Theatre
Lionel Bart was a British composer, lyricist, and playwright best known for creating 'Oliver!,' one of the most successful British musicals ever written. Songs including 'Food, Glorious Food,' 'Consider Yourself,' and 'As Long as He Needs Me' became standards. Bart also wrote early songs for Cliff Richard, including 'Living Doll,' and the musical 'Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be.' His working-class East End background informed his theatrical sensibility. Financial difficulties, partly from selling his 'Oliver!' rights, affected his later career. Bart's death in 1999 was marked by tributes acknowledging his contribution to British musical theatre. 'Oliver!' remains his enduring legacy, regularly revived worldwide.
