Artist: Lee Konitz
Genre: Jazz
Lee Konitz was an American jazz alto saxophonist who developed a distinctive cool jazz style independent of the dominant Charlie Parker influence. His work with Lennie Tristano, Claude Thornhill, and Miles Davis (on 'Birth of the Cool') established his reputation for lyrical, cerebral improvisation. Konitz's tone—light, pure, and immediately recognizable—distinguished him from nearly all other alto players. He recorded prolifically across seven decades, constantly seeking new contexts and challenges. Konitz's influence on cool jazz and his demonstration that individualism was possible even under bebop's dominance earned him deep respect among musicians. His death in 2020 from COVID-19 marked the loss of one of jazz's most distinctive voices.
