The Kinks were a British rock band formed in London in 1963, led by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. They became one of the most influential groups of the British Invasion and rock history overall. Ray Davies' songwriting combined keen social observation with melodic brilliance, producing classics like 'You Really Got Me,' 'Waterloo Sunset,' 'Lola,' and 'Sunny Afternoon.' Dave Davies' distorted guitar on 'You Really Got Me' pioneered the sound that would become hard rock and heavy metal. The Kinks' quintessentially English perspective distinguished them from more blues-influenced contemporaries. Albums like 'The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society' are considered masterpieces of concept album craft. Their influence extends through punk, Britpop, and alternative rock, with countless artists acknowledging their debt to the Davies brothers' vision.
