Kim Carnes is an American singer and songwriter whose distinctive raspy voice and 'Bette Davis Eyes' made her one of the early 1980s' most successful artists. 'Bette Davis Eyes' dominated 1981, spending nine weeks at number one and becoming the year's biggest hit worldwide. The song's atmospheric production and Carnes' unique vocal delivery created something genuinely distinctive. She also achieved success as a songwriter, co-writing 'Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer' with Kenny Rogers. Though she never replicated the massive success of 'Bette Davis Eyes,' Carnes maintained a career as a respected singer and songwriter. Her voice, often compared to Rod Stewart's, gave her recordings an immediately recognizable character that distinguished her from smoother-voiced contemporaries.
