Kid Ory was an American jazz trombonist and bandleader who became one of the most important figures in New Orleans jazz. His 'tailgate' trombone style, featuring sliding notes and rhythmic punctuation, defined the instrument's role in traditional jazz. Ory's bands in the 1920s included Louis Armstrong and King Oliver. After retiring from music in the 1930s, he returned during the traditional jazz revival of the 1940s and 1950s, leading successful bands and recording extensively. His composition 'Muskrat Ramble' became a Dixieland standard. Ory's influence on traditional jazz trombone was foundational, and his later career helped preserve and popularize New Orleans jazz for new audiences.
