Artist: Judge Dread
Genre: Reggae/Novelty
Judge Dread was the stage name of British reggae artist Alex Hughes, who became known for his rude, comedic records that brought reggae and ska to British audiences. He holds the record for the most consecutive single releases banned by the BBC, as his suggestive lyrics regularly ran afoul of broadcasting standards. Hits like 'Big Six,' 'Big Seven,' and 'Big Eight' achieved chart success despite (or because of) their risqué content. Judge Dread was notable as a white artist who found success in reggae, helping popularize the genre in Britain. His music combined authentic Jamaican musical styles with British music hall humor. Despite the novelty aspect, his records featured genuine reggae musicianship.
