Artist: John Martyn
Genre: Folk/Jazz
John Martyn was a Scottish singer-songwriter and guitarist whose innovative approach blended folk, jazz, rock, and electronic elements into a unique personal style. His use of the Echoplex delay unit created shimmering, atmospheric guitar textures that influenced numerous subsequent artists. Albums like 'Solid Air,' 'One World,' and 'Grace and Danger' are considered masterpieces of British folk-rock. 'Solid Air,' written for his friend Nick Drake, exemplifies his ability to combine technical innovation with emotional depth. Martyn's voice, a slurred, soulful instrument, added to his music's distinctive character. Though his personal life was turbulent and his commercial success inconsistent, Martyn's influence on British music was substantial. Artists from Eric Clapton to Portishead have acknowledged his impact on their work.
