Artist: John Cougar Mellencamp
Genre: Heartland Rock
John Mellencamp (formerly John Cougar and John Cougar Mellencamp) is an American singer-songwriter whose heartland rock captured working-class American experience with authenticity and passion. His hits, including 'Jack & Diane,' 'Small Town,' 'Pink Houses,' and 'Hurts So Good,' combined rock energy with folk storytelling traditions. Mellencamp's music addressed the struggles and values of rural and small-town America, making him a voice for those communities. His artistic growth saw him drop the imposed 'Cougar' stage name and pursue increasingly personal work. Mellencamp's paintings and activism demonstrated his range of interests beyond music. His influence on heartland rock and Americana established him alongside Springsteen as a chronicler of American working-class life.
