Joe Tex was an American soul singer and songwriter who achieved his greatest success in the 1960s and 1970s with his distinctive Southern soul style. His hits, including 'Hold What You've Got,' 'Skinny Legs and All,' and 'I Gotcha,' showcased his unique combination of preaching delivery, humor, and genuine emotional power. Tex's 'rap' style, featuring spoken word passages over music, anticipated hip-hop by decades. His rivalry with James Brown fueled both artists' creativity. Tex converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusef Hazziez before a comeback in the 1970s. His influence on soul music and the development of spoken word in R&B established him as an important innovator.
