Joe Sample was an American pianist and keyboard player who co-founded the Jazz Crusaders (later The Crusaders), one of the most successful jazz-funk groups. His sophisticated keyboard work combined jazz improvisation with R&B grooves, helping define the smooth jazz sound. Sample's compositions, including 'Street Life' (with vocals by Randy Crawford), achieved crossover success. His session work appeared on recordings by artists ranging from Steely Dan to B.B. King. Sample's solo albums demonstrated his range from acoustic jazz to contemporary R&B. His influence on jazz keyboard playing and the development of smooth jazz was substantial. Sample's career exemplified how jazz could maintain artistic integrity while achieving commercial appeal.
