Jody Watley is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer who achieved success first as a member of Shalamar and subsequently as a solo artist. Her self-titled solo debut (1987) earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist and produced hits including 'Looking for a New Love,' 'Don't You Want Me,' and 'Some Kind of Lover.' Watley's stylish image and innovative music videos made her a MTV staple. Her sound combined R&B vocals with dance-pop production, helping define late 1980s pop. Watley continued recording and performing, maintaining her status as a dance music icon. Her influence on subsequent R&B and pop artists included her attention to visual presentation as well as musical quality.
