Artist: Janis Ian
Genre: Folk/Singer-Songwriter
Janis Ian is an American singer-songwriter who first achieved fame at fifteen with 'Society's Child,' a controversial song about interracial relationships. Her biggest commercial success came with 'At Seventeen,' a poignant reflection on adolescent alienation that won a Grammy Award and resonated with listeners worldwide. Ian's intelligent, introspective songwriting addressed personal and social themes with unusual honesty and insight. Her career has spanned over five decades, encompassing folk, pop, and country styles while maintaining her commitment to meaningful lyrics. Ian has also been an outspoken advocate for musicians' rights in the digital age. Her influence on female singer-songwriters who value substance over style has been substantial and enduring.
