Jan Akkerman is a Dutch guitarist who achieved international recognition as a member of Focus and through his solo work. His virtuosic technique and eclectic style combined classical, jazz, rock, and ethnic influences into a distinctive approach. With Focus, he performed on hits like 'Hocus Pocus' and 'Sylvia,' demonstrating the commercial potential of progressive rock instrumentalism. Akkerman was named Best Guitarist in the World by Melody Maker in 1973. His solo albums explored jazz fusion and classical guitar traditions. Akkerman's influence on European progressive rock and fusion guitar was substantial. His combination of technical excellence with melodic sensibility made him one of the most respected guitarists to emerge from the progressive rock era.
