The James Taylor Quartet is a British acid jazz group led by Hammond organ player James Taylor. Formed in 1985, they became one of the most important acts in the acid jazz movement, combining jazz instrumentation with soul and funk grooves. Their music provided the template for the acid jazz sound that influenced British music in the late 1980s and 1990s. The JTQ's energetic performances and Taylor's virtuosic organ work earned them a devoted following. Their theme for the TV series 'Austin Powers' brought them mainstream recognition. The band demonstrated that jazz-influenced music could work in club contexts, influencing the broader British jazz revival. Taylor continued leading the group for decades.
