Immortal is a Norwegian black metal band from Bergen, formed in 1990. They became one of the most successful and enduring bands in the genre, known for their epic, cold atmosphere and lyrics focusing on the fictional realm of Blashyrkh. Albums like 'Pure Holocaust,' 'At the Heart of Winter,' and 'Sons of Northern Darkness' are considered classics of black metal. Founders Abbath and Demonaz created a distinctive sound that combined black metal aggression with almost anthemic qualities. Their music videos, featuring the band in corpse paint amid Norwegian winter landscapes, became iconic within metal culture. Despite lineup changes and hiatuses, Immortal's influence on black metal remains substantial, and they continue to be one of the genre's most respected acts.
