Artist: Illinois Jacquet
Genre: Jazz
Illinois Jacquet was an American jazz tenor saxophonist who became famous for his honking, extroverted style that helped bridge swing and rhythm and blues. His 1942 solo on Lionel Hampton's 'Flying Home' is considered one of the most influential saxophone solos in jazz history, establishing a template for R&B saxophone. Jacquet's style combined jazz sophistication with crowd-pleasing showmanship, making him popular with both jazz purists and general audiences. He was a fixture at Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts and led his own successful groups for decades. Jacquet's influence extended beyond jazz into rock and roll and R&B, where his honking style became foundational. He remained active until his death in 2004, celebrated as a living link to the classic era of jazz saxophone.
