Ian Campbell was a Scottish folk singer and musician who became an important figure in the British folk revival. As leader of the Ian Campbell Folk Group, he helped popularize traditional British folk music during the 1960s revival. The group's recordings introduced many listeners to traditional songs and helped establish the British folk club circuit. Campbell's dedication to preserving and performing traditional material while making it accessible to contemporary audiences characterized the best of the folk revival. His son is musician UB40's Ali Campbell. Ian Campbell's contribution to British folk music extended through his performing, recording, and support of the folk community that sustained traditional music during changing cultural times.
