Humphrey Lyttelton was a British jazz trumpeter, bandleader, broadcaster, and writer who became one of the most important figures in British jazz. He led his own band from 1948, championing traditional and mainstream jazz while remaining open to diverse influences. Lyttelton's recordings and performances helped establish and sustain the British jazz scene through decades of changing fashions. Beyond music, he became widely known as the host of BBC Radio 4's comedy panel show 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' for over 35 years. His wit, erudition, and passion for jazz made him a beloved national figure. Lyttelton's influence on British jazz, through his playing, bandleading, broadcasting, and writing, established him as the genre's greatest British champion.
