The Holy Modal Rounders were an American folk duo/band formed in New York City in 1963 by Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber. They became pioneers of psychedelic folk, combining old-time music with anarchic humor, drug references, and avant-garde experimentation. Their unique approach influenced the freak folk movement decades later. The Rounders' version of 'If You Want to Be a Bird' appeared in the film 'Easy Rider.' Their unpredictable performances and unconventional approach to folk music made them cult favorites among those seeking alternatives to both mainstream folk and rock. The Holy Modal Rounders' willingness to subvert folk music conventions while clearly loving the tradition created a template for subsequent generations of experimental folk artists.
