Herbie Mann was an American jazz flautist who became the most commercially successful flute player in jazz history. His adventurous approach led him to explore various world music styles including Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Middle Eastern music long before 'world music' became a recognized category. His 1969 live album 'Memphis Underground' crossed over to mainstream success by incorporating soul and rock influences. Mann's willingness to experiment and his business acumen made him a pioneer in jazz fusion and world jazz. He worked with artists ranging from Antonio Carlos Jobim to the Bee Gees, demonstrating remarkable versatility. His influence on the flute's role in jazz and his exploration of cross-cultural musical fusion expanded the boundaries of what jazz could encompass. Mann recorded prolifically until his death in 2003.
