Artist: Helen Shapiro
Genre: Pop
Helen Shapiro is a British pop singer who achieved remarkable success as a teenager in the early 1960s, becoming one of Britain's first homegrown pop stars before the British Invasion. At just 14, she had her first number-one hit with 'You Don't Know,' followed by 'Walking Back to Happiness,' which topped the UK charts in 1961. Her mature, powerful voice belied her young age and made her one of the biggest British stars of her era—The Beatles even opened for her on tour in 1963. Though her pop career faded as the 1960s progressed, Shapiro reinvented herself as a jazz singer and later as a performer of Christian music. Her influence as a pioneering British female pop star paved the way for subsequent generations of British women in pop music.
