Artist: Hank Mobley
Genre: Jazz
Hank Mobley was an American jazz tenor saxophonist who became one of the most recorded artists on Blue Note Records. His warm, round tone and melodic approach to hard bop made him highly regarded among jazz musicians and collectors. Mobley's style occupied a middle ground between the cool sophistication of Stan Getz and the aggressive approach of John Coltrane, earning description as 'the middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone.' His albums, including 'Soul Station,' 'Roll Call,' and 'Workout,' are considered classics of hard bop. Mobley also contributed to many classic Blue Note sessions as a sideman, appearing on albums by Art Blakey, Horace Silver, and Lee Morgan. Though sometimes overlooked in favor of more flamboyant contemporaries, Mobley's influence on jazz saxophone remains substantial.
