HIM was a Finnish rock band from Helsinki formed in 1991, known for pioneering 'love metal,' their self-described genre that combined heavy metal with gothic rock and romantic themes. Led by vocalist Ville Valo, the band achieved international success with albums like 'Razorblade Romance' and 'Dark Light.' Their hit single 'Join Me (In Death)' became a European sensation, while 'Wings of a Butterfly' broke them in the United States. HIM's combination of heaviness with melodic, romantic sensibility attracted fans across metal and goth scenes. Valo's baritone vocals and the band's heartagram symbol became iconic within alternative music. HIM disbanded in 2017 after a farewell tour, leaving a legacy as Finland's most internationally successful rock band and pioneers of a distinctive approach to dark, romantic rock.
