Artist: Gwen Guthrie
Genre: R&B/Dance
Gwen Guthrie was an American R&B and dance music singer and songwriter who achieved success both as a session vocalist and solo artist. Beginning her career as a backup singer and songwriter, she worked with artists including Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Roberta Flack. Her biggest solo success came with the 1986 hit 'Ain't Nothin' Goin' On but the Rent,' a frank anthem about financial security in relationships that topped the R&B charts and became a dance classic. The song's memorable hook and Guthrie's powerful delivery made it an enduring favorite. She also had success in the UK with 'Outside in the Rain' and other dance-oriented tracks. Guthrie's work helped bridge the gap between classic R&B and the emerging electronic dance music scene of the 1980s. Her untimely death in 1999 cut short a significant career.
