Ghost Dance were an English gothic rock band formed in Leeds in 1985 by guitarist Gary Marx after his departure from The Sisters of Mercy. The band's sound combined the dark atmospherics of gothic rock with more accessible, anthemic rock structures. Their album 'Stop the World' (1989) showcased their ability to create dramatic, guitar-driven rock with emotional depth. The band featured vocalist Anne-Marie Hurst, whose powerful voice added to their distinctive sound. Ghost Dance were part of the vibrant Leeds gothic and alternative rock scene that also produced The Mission. Though they never achieved the commercial success of some contemporaries, they maintained a devoted cult following. The band represented the melodic, accessible end of gothic rock during the genre's commercial peak in the late 1980s.
