Artist: Gerry Mulligan
Genre: Jazz
Gerry Mulligan was an American jazz baritone saxophonist, composer, and arranger who became one of the most important figures in cool jazz. His work with Miles Davis on the landmark 'Birth of the Cool' sessions in 1949-1950 helped define the cool jazz movement. Mulligan's pianoless quartet with trumpeter Chet Baker in the early 1950s became one of the most celebrated small groups in jazz history, producing a relaxed, contrapuntal style that contrasted with the intensity of bebop. His compositional and arranging skills were equally formidable, contributing to numerous big band projects. Mulligan's warm, lyrical approach to the baritone saxophone elevated the instrument's profile in jazz. He remained active throughout his life, collaborating with artists across generations. His influence on jazz saxophone and West Coast jazz continues to be felt today.
