Generation X was a British punk rock band formed in London in 1976, fronted by Billy Idol with guitarist Tony James. The band emerged from the initial wave of British punk but distinguished themselves with a more melodic, accessible approach that incorporated pop sensibilities and glam rock influences. Their hits included 'Ready Steady Go,' 'King Rocker,' and 'Valley of the Dolls,' which showcased their ability to write catchy punk-pop anthems. Unlike many of their punk contemporaries, Generation X embraced a more polished production and commercial appeal. The band released three albums before disbanding in 1981, after which Billy Idol launched his highly successful solo career. Generation X's fusion of punk energy with pop hooks influenced the development of power pop and new wave, making them an important bridge between punk and mainstream rock.
