Gary Brooker was a British singer, pianist, and songwriter best known as the founding member and lead vocalist of Procol Harum. His distinctive voice and classical piano training shaped the band's unique sound, most famously on 'A Whiter Shade of Pale,' one of the most iconic songs of the 1960s. Brooker's compositions often combined rock with classical and R&B influences, creating Procol Harum's sophisticated sound. Beyond Procol Harum, he worked with artists including Eric Clapton and Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. Brooker's solo albums showcased his songwriting abilities outside the band context. His vocal style, combining soulfulness with English reserve, influenced numerous singers. Brooker received a CBE for his services to music, recognizing a career that spanned over five decades and left an indelible mark on British rock.
