The Gap Band was an American R&B and funk group from Tulsa, Oklahoma, consisting of brothers Charlie, Ronnie, and Robert Wilson. Named after three streets in Tulsa's Greenwood District, the band became one of the most successful funk acts of the early 1980s. Their hits, including 'You Dropped a Bomb on Me,' 'Outstanding,' 'Burn Rubber on Me,' and 'Early in the Morning,' defined the sound of early 1980s funk with their heavy synthesizers, infectious grooves, and Charlie Wilson's distinctive vocals. Their albums 'Gap Band III,' 'Gap Band IV,' and 'Gap Band V: Jammin' were hugely successful. The band's influence on contemporary R&B and hip-hop is substantial, with their songs being sampled extensively. Charlie Wilson later enjoyed a successful solo career, but the Gap Band's legacy as funk innovators remains secure.
