Fletcher Henderson was an African American jazz pianist, arranger, and bandleader born in Georgia in 1897, becoming one of jazz history's most important figures through arrangements and big band jazz development role. Henderson led important 1920s-30s orchestras featuring jazz legends. His band was among first successfully translating New Orleans jazz to big band format. His arrangements established swing band orchestration templates. His greatest popular success came through arrangements for Benny Goodman launching swing era. Henderson's contribution to jazz arranging is immeasurable, making him foundational figure.
