Fatback Band was an American funk and disco group from New York City formed in 1970 by drummer Bill Curtis. The band became pioneers of funk and helped establish hip-hop by recording one of the first rap records, 'King Tim III' in 1979, actually released before 'Rapper's Delight.' Their tight, rhythm-focused sound emphasized brass sections, driving bass, and powerful drumming. Fatback achieved mainstream success with 'Spanish Hustle' and later transitioned into disco with hits like 'Double Dutch' and 'I Found Lovin'.' Their versatility allowed them to navigate changing trends while maintaining their emphasis on rhythm and groove, influencing subsequent generations of funk, disco, and hip-hop artists.
