Fanny were an American all-female rock band formed in California in 1969, significant as one of first all-female rock groups achieving major label success in male-dominated genre. Founded by sisters June and Jean Millington, Fanny played their own instruments proficiently and wrote material. Their music combined rock, blues, and pop into muscular sound proving women could play powerfully. They released five albums 1970-1974 receiving praise from critics including David Bowie. Despite critical acclaim, commercial success proved elusive. Fanny's significance extends beyond music to pioneering role opening doors for female rock musicians.
