Enrico Caruso was an Italian operatic tenor born in 1873, who became one of the first international recording stars and one of the greatest tenors in history. Caruso's powerful, beautiful voice and expressive singing made him the most popular singer of his era. He performed at the world's leading opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he was the house's leading tenor for 18 seasons. Caruso made over 260 recordings, making him one of the first classical musicians whose voice was widely heard through recordings rather than just live performance. His recordings demonstrated that opera could be successfully captured and commercialized through recording technology. Caruso's voice was characterized by power, beauty, and emotional expressiveness. He passed away in 1921 at age 48. Caruso's recordings introduced millions to opera and established recording as central to classical music's dissemination.
