The Enid are an English progressive rock band formed in 1974 by Robert John Godfrey, known for their classical-influenced progressive rock and independent approach. The band creates symphonic rock combining classical music structures with rock instrumentation, often featuring orchestral arrangements. The Enid have maintained complete independence throughout their career, self-releasing albums and maintaining artistic control. Their music is characterized by elaborate compositions, romantic themes, and Godfrey's keyboard work. Despite never achieving major commercial success, The Enid built a devoted cult following and pioneered fan-funded recording. They've released numerous albums and continue performing, maintaining their vision despite commercial pressures. The Enid represent progressive rock's most independent, classically-influenced wing, demonstrating that bands can sustain long careers through devoted fan bases without commercial compromise. They continue as one of prog rock's longest-running independent acts.
