Emperor are a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991, becoming one of the most influential bands in Norwegian black metal's second wave. The band, founded by Ihsahn and Samoth, created symphonic black metal combining raw aggression with keyboard atmospheres and complex compositions. Albums like 'In the Nightside Eclipse' and 'Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk' are black metal classics, featuring blast beats, tremolo-picked guitars, and symphonic elements. Emperor's music was more ambitious and compositionally complex than typical black metal, incorporating progressive and classical influences. Despite members' involvement in Norwegian black metal's controversial early 1990s scene, Emperor focused on musical progression. They split in 2001 but have reunited for occasional performances. Emperor represents black metal at its most ambitious and symphonic, demonstrating that extreme metal could be both brutal and compositionally sophisticated. Their influence on symphonic and progressive black metal is substantial.
