Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP) were an English progressive rock supergroup formed in 1970, consisting of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass, guitar, vocals), and Carl Palmer (drums). ELP became one of the most successful progressive rock bands, known for their virtuosic musicianship and elaborate live shows. Their music combined classical influences with rock, featuring Emerson's pioneering use of synthesizers and Hammond organ. Albums like 'Tarkus,' 'Trilogy,' and 'Brain Salad Surgery' are prog rock classics. ELP's adaptations of classical pieces including Mussorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' demonstrated their ambition. Despite critical dismissal as pretentious, ELP achieved massive commercial success. They disbanded in 1979, reformed periodically, and finally ended after Emerson's death in 2016 and Palmer's in 2017. ELP represented progressive rock's most bombastic wing, creating technically impressive music that divided critics but attracted devoted fans.
