Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was a German-born soprano born in 1915, who became one of the 20th century's greatest opera singers and interpreters of lieder. Schwarzkopf was particularly renowned for her interpretations of Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Hugo Wolf. Her voice was characterized by beauty of tone, technical perfection, and exceptional intelligence in text interpretation. Schwarzkopf's recordings of Strauss's 'Four Last Songs,' Mozart operas, and Wolf lieder are considered definitive. She was also an exceptional recitalist, bringing sophisticated interpretation to art songs. Schwarzkopf's career included performances at major opera houses worldwide and extensive recording work. She retired from singing in 1979 and devoted herself to teaching. Schwarzkopf passed away in 2006. She represented classical singing at its most refined and intelligent, demonstrating that technical perfection and deep musical understanding could create transcendent performances. Her recordings continue to influence singers.
