Sir Edward Elgar was an English composer born in 1857, who became one of Britain's greatest composers and an international figure. Elgar's music includes symphonies, concertos, oratorios, and chamber music that elevated British classical music to international prominence. His 'Enigma Variations' and 'Pomp and Circumstance Marches' (particularly 'Land of Hope and Glory') are among classical music's most popular works. Elgar's cello concerto is considered one of the instrument's greatest works. His music combines Romantic expressiveness with British sensibility, featuring noble themes and emotional depth. Elgar was knighted in 1904 and served as Master of the King's Musick. He passed away in 1934. Elgar represented the revival of British classical music in the late Romantic period, demonstrating that British composers could achieve international stature. His music remains central to the British classical repertoire and is performed worldwide.
