Edwin Starr was an American soul singer born in 1942, best known for his powerful protest song 'War,' which topped charts in 1970 and became an anti-Vietnam War anthem. Starr's powerful voice and energetic delivery made him successful in both soul and Northern Soul scenes. He recorded for Motown and other labels, scoring hits including 'Twenty-Five Miles' and 'Stop the War Now.' Starr's music combined soul vocals with funk rhythms and socially conscious lyrics. He achieved particular success in the UK, where he relocated in the 1970s and maintained popularity on the Northern Soul circuit. Starr passed away in 2003. He represented soul music's socially conscious wing, demonstrating that soul could address political issues powerfully.
