Artist: Edgar Broughton Band
Genre: Progressive Rock
The Edgar Broughton Band were an English rock band formed in Warwickshire in 1968, known for their psychedelic blues-rock and political activism. Led by Edgar Broughton, the band created heavy, blues-influenced rock with political lyrics addressing social issues. Their performances were confrontational and theatrical, making them fixtures of the British underground and festival circuit. Songs like 'Out Demons Out' became anthems for the counterculture. The Edgar Broughton Band was more raw and politically engaged than typical progressive rock, maintaining punk's spirit before punk existed. Despite critical acclaim and devoted following, commercial success was limited. The band disbanded in the 1970s but reformed occasionally. They represented British rock's more politically radical wing, demonstrating that rock could be both musically powerful and politically committed. Their influence on British underground rock and their uncompromising political stance made them important beyond commercial success.
