East of Eden were a British progressive rock band formed in Bristol in 1967, known for their fusion of rock with jazz, classical, and world music influences. The band featured violin prominently, unusual for rock at the time. Their music combined progressive rock complexity with accessible melodies and diverse influences including Indian music. East of Eden achieved moderate success with their album 'Mercator Projected' and the single 'Jig-a-Jig,' which incorporated Celtic influences. The band's willingness to experiment with instrumentation and influences made them distinctive in progressive rock. Despite quality and innovation, East of Eden never achieved major commercial breakthrough and disbanded in the mid-1970s. They represented British progressive rock's more eclectic wing, demonstrating that prog could incorporate diverse world music influences. East of Eden influenced later progressive and folk-rock bands with their unconventional approach and use of violin in rock contexts.
