Earthtone9 are an English metal band formed in Nottingham in 1998, known for their heavy, groove-oriented metal combining elements of progressive metal, metalcore, and alternative metal. The band creates complex, heavy music featuring polyrhythmic structures, harsh vocals, and technical instrumentation. Their sound has been described as 'ambient metal' for incorporating atmospheric elements alongside heaviness. Earthtone9 released several albums including 'Omega' and 'Off-Kilter' before initially disbanding in 2005. They reformed in 2009 and continue performing. The band never achieved mainstream success but built a devoted following in the underground metal scene. Earthtone9 represent British metal's more progressive, experimental wing, demonstrating that metal could incorporate complexity and atmosphere while maintaining heaviness. They influenced later British progressive and technical metal bands with their uncompromising approach to heavy music.
