Artist: Earl Hines
Genre: Jazz
Earl Hines was an American jazz pianist born in 1903, known as 'Fatha' Hines, who became one of the most influential pianists in jazz history. Hines pioneered the 'trumpet-style' piano playing, using octaves and breaking up the rhythm in ways that paralleled the improvisations of horn players. His right-hand technique revolutionized jazz piano, influencing virtually every pianist who followed. Hines led his own big band for decades and was one of the first Black musicians to lead a coast-to-coast radio broadcast. He worked with Louis Armstrong in the late 1920s, creating groundbreaking recordings. Hines's playing was characterized by rhythmic sophistication, harmonic innovation, and virtuosic technique. He continued performing until shortly before his death in 1983. Hines represents jazz piano at its most influential, establishing techniques and approaches that defined the instrument's role in jazz. His contribution to jazz piano is fundamental and enduring.
