Earl Bostic was an American jazz and R&B alto saxophonist born in 1913, who became one of the most influential saxophonists in R&B and early rock and roll. Bostic's virtuosic playing and showmanship influenced countless saxophonists including John Coltrane and King Curtis. His recordings featured both sophisticated jazz improvisation and exciting R&B honking and screaming techniques. Bostic achieved success with both jazz and R&B audiences, demonstrating that technical virtuosity and popular appeal could coexist. His hits included 'Flamingo' and 'Harlem Nocturne.' Bostic's playing was characterized by technical perfection, emotional intensity, and ability to work across jazz and R&B contexts. He influenced the development of rock and roll saxophone playing. Bostic passed away in 1965. He represents jazz musicians who successfully crossed into R&B and early rock and roll, maintaining musical integrity while achieving commercial success and influencing multiple genres.
